Why is my modem disconnecting all of the time?Modem disconnects issues are definitely some of the most annoying problems to have with regards to the Internet. There are a couple things though that you can check to help you with this problem. 1) There is a program that is telling your computer to disconnect from the internet. This is most common a problem when dealing with Microsoft mail clients such as Outlook and Outlook Express. In both of these programs there is a setting, that when checked on, will tell your computer to disconnect off of the internet once your computer has logged onto the mail server and checked your mail. In situations like this, it is important to make sure that the option to disconnect when completed is turned off. 2) Your modem is in need of a driver and/or firmware update. Most modem manufacturers will make driver or firmware updates for their modems every year or so. With technology progressing as fast as it is, these driver updates are produced to make sure that your modem is working as optimally as it can be. Check with the manufacturer of the modem (either via their website or via phone) to see if there are updated drivers that you can download and install so that it is up-to-date. 3) There is interference in your phone lines that cause disconnects. Line noise on a phone line will make a connection very susceptible to disconnects. Even you do not hear any audible static when you talk on the phone, that does not mean that it might not still be there. Data connections are very sensitive to even the slightest noise. To test this, you can contact your telephone company and have them do a loop-back test. This will allow them to see if there is any discernable noise on your lines and correct it if necessary. 4) Your modem might need its settings optimized. We can sometimes optimize your modem to work around some of the above issues by tweaking certain settings with your modem setup.
